Im Gebiet Stollberg-Lugau tritt der für das erzgebirgische Schiefersystem typische tonschieferähnliche kambrische Phyllite an die Oberfläche. In diesem befinden sich untergeordnet auch Quarzitschiefer. Auffallend sind die dunkle bis rotbraune Färbung und der seidige Glanz der Bruchfläche. Wegen seiner guten Spaltbarkeit, wurde der Schiefer früher als Dachschiefer gebrochen. Übrigens: Stimmt die klimatische Lage ist Quarzitschiefer ein guter Standort für den Anbau von Wein.
