Über die Sammlung

Die beiden naturkundlichen Vereine der Städte Mylau und Reichenbach begannen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts mit dem Aufbau umfangreicher völkerkundlicher Sammlungen. Die Herkunft eines erheblichen Teils dieser Kulturgüter geht auf die ehemaligen deutschen Kolonien in Afrika und Ozeanien zurück.
112 aus Afrika (Namibia, Tansania, Kamerun, Südafrika etc.) stammende Provenienzen werden im Rahmen des Projekts recherchiert – und dabei vor allem der Erwerb, der Weg in die Sammlungen und die Sammlung aufgezeigt Personen, die an diesem Prozess beteiligt sind. Dazu gehören die Ermittlung von Verdachtsmomenten im Zusammenhang mit Fällen kolonialen Unrechts und die Durchführung eingehender Recherchen. Das Forschungsprojekt "Provenienz und Geschichte der Ethnologischen Sammlung Mylau/Reichenbach" (1.1.2022 bis 31.03.2023) wurde durch das Zentrum für Kulturgutverluste, Förderschwerpunkt "Koloniale Kontexte", der Landesstelle für Museumswesen Sachsen und den Kulturraum Vogtland-Zwickau gefördert.
Die meisten Objekte der Sammlungen der beiden naturkundlichen Vereine befinden sich seit den 1980er Jahren im Museum für Völkerkunde in Dresden.
Daher wird auch das Zusammenspiel und die spätere Übergabe von Artefakten und Teilen der Sammlungen an das Museum für Völkerkunde in Dresden erforscht. Dabei geht es insbesondere um die Transaktionen des Heimatmuseums Burg Mylau nach Dresden im Rahmen der Zentralisierungsbestrebungen in der ehemaligen DDR.
Zum Projekt gehört auch der Aufbau eines Netzwerks mit den Herkunftsgemeinschaften und Institutionen wie Museen, Universitäten und Archiven in den Herkunftsländern. Dieses Netzwerk soll die Grundlage für die gemeinsame Erforschung der Kulturgüter bilden und eine langfristige Zusammenarbeit mit Menschen aus den Herkunftsgesellschaften und wissenschaftlichen Partnern in den Herkunftsländern etablieren.
Kooperationspartner des Projekts sind die Staatlichen Ethnographischen Sammlungen Sachsen.

The two natural history associations in the towns of Mylau and Reichenbach started to create extensive ethnological collections at the end of the 19th century. The origin of a significant portion of these cultural artefacts dates back to the former German colonies in Africa and Oceania.
Research is being conducted into the provenance of 112 artefacts originating from Africa (Namibia, Tanzania, Cameroon and South Africa etc.) within the project – and this primarily involves highlighting how they were acquired, how the items found their way into the collections and the people involved in this process. This includes determining any suspicious facts related to cases of colonial injustice and performing in-depth research. The research project "Provenance and History of the Mylau/Reichenbach Ethnological Collection" (01/01/2022 to 03/31/2023) was funded by the Center for the Loss of Cultural Assets, funding priority "Colonial Contexts", the State Office for Museums Saxony and the Vogtland-Zwickau cultural area.
Most of the artefacts in the collections from both natural history associations have been located at the Museum of Ethnology in Dresden since the 1980s.
Research is therefore being conducted into the interaction and later handing over of artefacts and parts of the collections to the Museum of Ethnology in Dresden too. This particularly involves looking at the transactions performed by the Mylau Castle Local History Museum to Dresden as part of the centralisation efforts in former East Germany.
The project also includes setting up a network with the communities of origin and institutions such as museums, universities and archives in the countries of origin. This network is designed to form the basis for joint research into the cultural artefacts and establish a long-term cooperation arrangement with people from the communities of origin and academic partners in the countries of origin.
